dc.description.abstracten	In the complex context of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, marked by military and political tensions, the capital of Portuguese America underwent a profound transformation with the transfer of the Portuguese Court to Rio de Janeiro, bringing to colonial lands institutions, magistrates and a dynamic of functioning that had previously been specific to the metropolis. This process saw the introduction of the first brazilian police experience with the creation of the Intendência Geral da Polícia and the Guarda Real da Polícia, both created within a political model of the Ancien Régime that understood police in a broad sense of administration of territory and population. Throughout the decades of the 19th century, Brazil experienced a series of episodes and political changes, which reflected on the very meaning of the term police and police work. This research propouse to contribute on this axis. Through both a parliamentary analysis, of speeches in the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies, and an institutional analysis, by studying the police sources produced within the police structure of the brazilian Court, notices, official letters, reports, among other documents, we developed a study that analyzes the characteristics of this police structure at each political moment and demonstrates how the transition between the dominant political groups influenced the transformation of these police institutions. In addition to a look at the organization and discipline of the police forces of Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century, we study, through police sources, the daily life of these forces, the police work and how the attributions of these institutions changed over time. In this sense, the police institutions created in the 1830s to replace the Intendência and the Guarda Real, the Secretaria de Polícia and the Corpo de Permanentes, emerged at a time of institutional specialization in which the police began to be understood as the segment of the State responsible for maintaining order and public security, leaving behind the comprehensive aspect of the police in the Ancien Régime.	pt_BR

dc.description.abstractpt	No complexo contexto do final do século XVIII e começo do século XIX, marcado por tensões militares e políticas, a capital da América Portuguesa viveu uma profunda transformação com a transferência da Corte portuguesa para o Rio de Janeiro, trazendo para terras coloniais instituições, magistrados e uma dinâmica de funcionamento até então próprios da metrópole. Neste processo houve a introdução da primeira experiência policial brasileira com a criação da Intendência Geral da Polícia e a Guarda Real da Polícia, ambas criadas num modelo político de Antigo Regime que entendia polícia num sentido amplo de administração do território e da população. Ao longo das décadas do século XIX o Brasil vivenciou uma série de episódios e mudanças políticas, as quais refletiram no próprio sentido do termo polícia e do fazer policial. É neste eixo que esta pesquisa se insere. Por meio de uma análise tanto parlamentar, dos discursos no plenário da Câmara dos Deputados, quanto institucional, ao estudar as fontes policiais produzidas no interior da estrutura policial da Corte brasileira, avisos, ofícios, relatórios, entre outros documentos, desenvolvemos uma estudo que analisa as características desta estrutura policial em cada momento político e demonstramos como a transição entre os grupos políticos dominantes influenciaram na transformação destas instituições policiais. Além de um olhar sobre a organização e disciplina das forças policiais do Rio de Janeiro no XIX, estudamos, por meio das fontes policiais, o cotidiano destes corpos, o fazer policial e como as atribuições destas instituições se modificaram ao longo do tempo. Neste sentido, as instituições policiais criadas na década de 1830 em lugar da Intendência e da Guarda, a Secretaria de Polícia e o Corpo de Permanentes, surgiram num momento de especialização institucional em que a polícia passa a ser entendida como o segmento do Estado responsável pela manutenção da ordem e da segurança pública, deixando para o passado o aspecto abrangente da polícia no Antigo Regime.	pt_BR
