dc.description.abstracten	This dissertation investigates the construction of the National Archives’ memory through the analysis of three publications: The Archive in the Empire (1937), The Situation of the National Archives (1959) and National Archives – 150 Years (1988). The research is part of the field of Social Memory in dialogue with Archival Science and Information Science. The methodology, based on content analysis proposed by Bardin, sought to highlight how these works represent different historical moments and contribute to the formulation of discourses on the mission and legitimacy of the National Archives as guardian of the national documentary heritage. Each publication reflects distinct priorities and narratives – from founding exaltation to technical criticism and modernizing celebration – that shape the institution’s image before the State and society. The study reveals the absence of a consolidated memory policy, highlights the importance of archives in preserving history and proposes the expansion of approaches to memory beyond hegemonic voices. By problematizing the forms of representation of the trajectory of the National Archives, the dissertation reinforces the relevance of archives as strategic spaces of citizenship, historical truth and social justice.	pt_BR

dc.description.abstractpt	Esta dissertação investiga a construção da memória do Arquivo Nacional por meio da análise de três publicações: O Arquivo no Império (1937), A situação do Arquivo Nacional (1959) e Arquivo Nacional – 150 anos (1988). A pesquisa insere-se no campo da Memória Social em diálogo com a Arquivologia e a Ciência da Informação. A metodologia baseada na análise de conteúdo proposta por Bardin, buscou evidenciar como essas obras representam diferentes momentos históricos e contribuem para a formulação de discursos sobre a missão e legitimidade do Arquivo Nacional como guardião do patrimônio documental nacional. Cada publicação reflete prioridades e narrativas distintas – da exaltação fundacional à crítica técnica e à celebração modernizante – que moldam a imagem da instituição perante o Estado e a sociedade. O estudo revela a ausência de uma política de memória consolidada, destaca a importância dos arquivos na preservação da história e propõe a ampliação das abordagens sobre memória para além das vozes hegemônicas. Ao problematizar as formas de representação da trajetória do Arquivo Nacional, a dissertação reforça a relevância dos arquivos como espaços estratégicos de cidadania, verdade histórica e justiça social.	pt_BR
